Safari Club International summer youth camp scholarships now available

LANSING, Mich. — Scholarships to attend the Riley Wilderness Student Adventure program this summer are now available for youths interested in exploring the outdoors, Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker announced on Tuesday.

Thanks to the generosity of the George F. Riley Foundation, Safari Club International (SCI) of Novi is providing 60 youth camp scholarships for kids who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer camp experience.

“Michigan is a place of exceptional beauty, from the Great Lakes to our state parks.  Unfortunately, there are too many children in Michigan who aren’t able to enjoy all the beautiful places the state has to offer,” said Schuitmaker, R-Lawton. “This scholarship program will be an amazing opportunity for some very deserving kids to learn hunting and fishing while having some great fun outdoors.

“I am grateful to SCI and the George F. Riley Foundation for working to provide youth with outdoor experiences they might otherwise not have.”

To be eligible for the scholarship, the youth must meet one or more of the following criteria:
•    Have very limited or no experience in hunting and the outdoors;
•    Be unable to afford the cost to attend a program of this nature;
•    Lack an active mentor to expose them to outdoor activities; or
•    Have not yet completed a Michigan Hunter Safety Certificate program.

There are currently two available camps:

Conservation Connections Camp (Ages 9-11), July 8-13: Campers will learn survival, orienteering, archery, canoeing, shooting sports and fishing in a safe and positive environment.

Big Game or Upland Bird Hunting Camp (Ages 12-14), July 15-20: Campers will develop their skills as big game hunters or upland bird hunters. Throughout the week they will work with experts in animal identification while learning valuable hunting techniques and strategies.

“These camps are excellent learning and recreational experiences that will positively impact lives and create unforgettable memories,” Schuitmaker said.

Interested individuals should apply at as soon as possible as available spots fill quickly.  The deadline is June 18.
