Schuitmaker, area leaders team up for 6th Annual Senior and Veteran Expo

LANSING—State Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker and Kalamazoo-area lawmakers have joined forces to host the sixth annual Senior and Veteran Expo in conjunction with the Mattawan Lions Club on May 2.

The free event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Antwerp Township Activity Center, located at 24821 Front St. in Mattawan.

“The expo is a fun, informative day for local seniors and our military veterans, but it doesn’t happen without the support and participation of the sponsors and exhibitors who make it a success,” said Schuitmaker, R-Lawton.  “We want to continue this annual tradition by building on the achievements of last year and combining our efforts with the Mattawan Lions Club.”

Schuitmaker will be joined by state Reps. Aric Nesbitt, R-Lawton, and Margaret O’Brien, R-Portage.

The expo has grown in just six years from only a few hundred attendees the first year to more than a thousand. Schuitmaker expects more than 100 exhibitors to showcase their products and give away free samples this year. She credits that local involvement with the expo’s growth.

Many community service providers, health care professionals, businesses and organizations will be available to meet the needs of southwest Michigan’s seniors and veterans, including health screenings by Bronson Lakeview Hospital and also vision screenings. Military memorabilia will also be on display, including American and captured enemy weapons donated by local veterans.

A lunch will be available free of charge as well.

Transportation will be provided for seniors and veterans to attend the event.  For transportation, please call 24 hours in advance to reserve your space. Van Buren County residents should call 269-427-7921; those living in Kalamazoo County should call Senior Services at 269-382-0515 ext. 314.
