Through a unique partnership with Early Head Start of Community Action of Allegan County, students are offered free childcare. Students engage in the parenting curriculum, interact with their child and child’s teacher during Parent and Child Time each day, and participate in parenting conferences and workshops throughout the county. As Alexis Kent states, “If it were not for STAR, I would not be in school.” Alexis will graduate this May.
Additional community connections include the Allegan Area Technology Center, Community Mental Health, Community Infant Mental Health, Nurses from the Allegan Health Department, MiWorks, MSU Extension, the R.O.C.K. mentoring program, local libraries, Early On, and Bridges of Hope. In addition, students have to complete volunteer hours. STAR truly builds and strengthens two generations that will in turn strengthen their communities for years to come.
