Tonya Schuitmaker, R-Lawton, pay tribute to good Samaritans Jerry Burnham of Berrien Springs (center right) and Keith Pepple of Plainwell for coming to the aid of a state trooper under attack. After a pursuit, Michigan State Police Trooper Garry Guild (center) was attacked by two men. Upon witnessing the altercation, Burnham and Pepple stopped their vehicles, stopped the action and saved the trooper's life. Both Burnham and Pepple were presented with special tributes during Senate session with their families.

State Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker, R-Lawton, discusses ways we can reduce sexual assaults on Michigan's campuses, while also increasing the reporting at the "Let's End Sexual Assault Summit" on Monday. Schuitmaker also thanked First Lady Sue Snyder for leading the important initiative. Schuitmaker said sexual assaults on college campuses are underreported and we have to do everything we can to make sure victims feel comfortable coming forward. Michigan?s 15 public universities all use different reporting procedures, and a standardized set of rules would go a long way in increasing the number of victims reaching out and giving a report on their assailant. An alarming number of students are victims of sexual assault or attempted sexual assault during their college years, and only a small percentage of those assaults are ever reported.

State Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker, R-Lawton, administers the oath of office to state Fire Marshal Ronald Farr. Mr. Farr, of Otsego, was reappointed to the position by Gov. Rick Snyder in February.

State Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker, R-Antwerp Township, is administered the oath of office by Michigan Supreme Court Justice Robert P. Young, Jr. Standing with Schuitmaker is her husband, Steve Mucci. Other family members in attendance include her son Jordan and daughter Savina Mucci; and her parents, Harold and Zoe Schuitmaker. Michigan senators were sworn in on the first session day of the 96th Legislature.
